A brief article in today’s Helsingin Sanomat tells us on Thursday armed Russian soldiers detained the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise and on Friday started to tow her into the port of Murmansk on the Barents Sea. The aim of the ship’s voyage had been to protest against Arctic oil drilling. The Russian authorities are threatening the activists with piracy charges. On Wednesday, two Greenpeace activists were detained by Russian law enforcement officials after they boarded an oil-drilling vessel belonging to Gazprom. One of the detained was the Finn Sini Saarela.
